Fried Green Tomatoes

It won't be long...Spring is around the corner and that means time for the garden! Nothing is better than walking out there and picking what you're going to eat for dinner that night. It makes all the sweat and hard work worth it. One of our favorites is fried green tomatoes. Last year, we had a few tomato plants planted in a spot that kept the frost from killing them.  It was a treat to be able to fry up a plate of fried green tomatoes that late into the fall.

INGREDIENTS:
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. pepper
  • 4 medium size green tomatoes, cut into 1/2 inch slices
  • vegetable oil

DIRECTIONS:
Combine cornmeal, flour, sugar, salt and pepper into a medium mixing bowl; stir well. Dredge tomato slices in mixture. Fry tomato slices, a few at a time, in 1/4 inch hot oil in a large skillet until browned, turning once. Drain on paper towels.
